Teaching to a Captive Audience

“Teaching to a Captive Audience” with Lois Colton (in person), Bonnie Withers, celebrant. What are your perceptions of teaching in a prison? Our long-time MCUUF friend, Lois Colton, who recently retired from a twenty-year career as a prison teacher, has completed her book, Teaching to a Captive AudienceOne Woman’s Experiences Teaching Incarcerated Students at the Oregon State Penitentiary.  After work as a Vista Volunteer, then teaching disadvantaged literacy and immigrant students in her community, Lois found her true calling teaching in Oregon’s maximum security state penitentiary. She has been recognized for her outstanding and innovative work, including being voted twice as Corrections Educator of the Year in North America’s Region VI for the international Correction Education Association. Come hear an insider’s view into the hidden world of a large maximum-security prison, a look at the opportunities, benefits, and transformative power of prison education programs, and an intimate exploration of the bonds created between teachers and learners no matter where they are. The service will be in person and online.
