Rev. Justine Sullivan (taped) and Celebrant Bonnie Withers.
This is a hybrid service. We proudly refer to Unitarian Universalism as a “living tradition” but what does that actually mean? If a “tradition” is “living”, it is both grounded in a set of values and is reflected through the lens of a changing world. This is the basis for the efforts of the UUA Article II Study Commission, which presented its first report to the UUA General Assembly last month. After the assembled delegates worked through over 70 proposed amendments, the document, which replaces our current principles and purposes, received an approval vote of 85%. Final vote will occur at next year’s General Assembly. Wait, what? No more 7 principles on the screen each week? Replaced by what? And why? Find the answers to these questions on August 13 at our regular Sunday service at the Rockford Grange or on Zoom. A lively taped sermon excerpt by Rev. Justine Sullivan, First UU San Diego (Gail Adams’ church) will set the historical context for the move toward a rewrite of Article II. Then we will introduce the new document and logo which is intended to express what we, today, embrace as our Living Tradition. |
